Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Utilities, Telecoms and Consumer Services sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.25%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.17%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.37%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), which rose 1.64% or 1.77 points to trade at 109.45 at the close. Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) added 1.07% or 3.96 points to end at 375.56 and The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV) was up 0.82% or 1.81 points to 221.89 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN), which lost 2.75% or 7.88 points to trade at 278.49 in late trade. UnitedHealth Group Incorporated (NYSE:UNH) declined 2.30% or 12.07 points to end at 513.25 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) shed 1.44% or 2.23 points to 152.22.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which rose 19.87% to 19.09, Constellation Energy Corp (NASDAQ:CEG) which was up 16.92% to settle at 155.76 and Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) which gained 7.65% to close at 15.91.
The worst performers were International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (NYSE:IFF) which was down 3.86% to 74.42 in late trade, SBA Communications Corp (NASDAQ:SBAC) which lost 3.77% to settle at 199.95 and Henry Schein Inc (NASDAQ:HSIC) which was down 3.38% to 77.85 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Janux Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:JANX) which rose 229.47% to 49.75, Sizzle Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:SZZL) which was up 125.23% to settle at 22.50 and Viking Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:VKTX) which gained 121.02% to close at 85.05.
The worst performers were Minerva Neurosciences Inc (NASDAQ:NERV) which was down 58.82% to 2.80 in late trade, Infobird Co Ltd (NASDAQ:IFBD) which lost 53.62% to settle at 1.28 and NRX Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:NRXP) which was down 31.24% to 0.29 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1672 to 1185 and 87 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2071 rose and 1352 declined, while 124 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.26% to 13.43.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.02% or 0.35 to $2,039.25 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in April rose 1.21% or 0.94 to hit $78.52 a barrel, while the May Brent oil contract rose 0.80% or 0.65 to trade at $82.32 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.02% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.13% to 150.49.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.01% at 103.74.
