Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Technology and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Utilities and Financials sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.46%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.03%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 0.57%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which rose 1.30% or 2.80 points to trade at 218.45 at the close. Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE) added 0.84% or 1.05 points to end at 126.20 and Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) was up 0.77% or 1.31 points to 172.32 in late trade.
Biggest losers included The Travelers Companies Inc (NYSE:TRV), which lost 1.85% or 3.47 points to trade at 184.13 in late trade. Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) declined 1.67% or 1.01 points to end at 59.59 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) shed 1.58% or 5.10 points to 318.43.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were IPG Photonics Corporation (NASDAQ:IPGP) which rose 11.56% to 125.55, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which was up 7.51% to settle at 209.25 and Aptiv PLC (NYSE:APTV) which gained 7.37% to close at 121.10.
The worst performers were Leidos Holdings Inc (NYSE:LDOS) which was down 5.42% to 95.25 in late trade, Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc (NYSE:MMC) which lost 4.02% to settle at 167.00 and Arthur J Gallagher & Co (NYSE:AJG) which was down 3.57% to 188.25 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Amesite Operating Co (NASDAQ:AMST) which rose 81.62% to 0.51, Boxlight Corp Class A (NASDAQ:BOXL) which was up 39.47% to settle at 0.56 and United Insurance Holdings Corp (NASDAQ:UIHC) which gained 37.27% to close at 1.51.
The worst performers were Top Ships Inc (NASDAQ:TOPS) which was down 44.85% to 0.91 in late trade, Mobiquity Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:MOBQ) which lost 32.77% to settle at 0.35 and Pathfinder Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:MVLA) which was down 31.61% to 4.24 at the close.
Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1592 to 1442 and 128 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1953 fell and 1688 advanced, while 219 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 7.03% to 18.91.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for April delivery was up 0.10% or 1.95 to $1,865.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in March fell 1.27% or 1.02 to hit $79.12 a barrel, while the April Brent oil contract fell 1.14% or 0.99 to trade at $85.62 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.16% to 1.07, while USD/JPY rose 0.49% to 133.05.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.10% at 103.14.
