Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Utilities, Basic Materials and Healthcare sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Oil & Gas, Technology and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.23%, while the S&P 500 index declined 0.34%, and the NASDAQ Composite index fell 0.33%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ), which rose 4.54% or 6.57 points to trade at 151.16 at the close. Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) added 2.21% or 3.86 points to end at 178.86 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 2.18% or 3.66 points to 171.50 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Nike Inc (NYSE:NKE), which lost 2.11% or 1.95 points to trade at 90.31 in late trade. American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) declined 1.16% or 2.71 points to end at 231.31 and International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) shed 1.14% or 1.89 points to 164.31.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Bio-Techne Corp (NASDAQ:TECH) which rose 16.22% to 73.46, Garmin Ltd (NYSE:GRMN) which was up 13.11% to settle at 163.41 and Amcor (NYSE:AMCR) which gained 9.56% to close at 9.79.
The worst performers were CVS Health Corp (NYSE:CVS) which was down 16.80% to 56.34 in late trade, Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) which lost 15.88% to settle at 74.44 and Skyworks Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:SWKS) which was down 15.28% to 90.30 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Society Pass Inc (NASDAQ:SOPA) which rose 1,447.01% to 1.81, CytomX Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:CTMX) which was up 214.72% to settle at 5.13 and SYLA Technologies Co Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:SYT) which gained 122.45% to close at 3.27.
The worst performers were Cemtrex Inc (NASDAQ:CETX) which was down 73.20% to 0.31 in late trade, Beneficient (NASDAQ:BENF) which lost 38.55% to settle at 2.04 and CVRx Inc (NASDAQ:CVRX) which was down 34.75% to 10.12 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1694 to 1160 and 56 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2006 rose and 1346 declined, while 116 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 1.66% to 15.39.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.17% or 26.85 to $2,329.75 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in June fell 3.34% or 2.74 to hit $79.19 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract fell 3.15% or 2.72 to trade at $83.61 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 0.49% to 1.07, while USD/JPY fell 1.98% to 154.67.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.55% at 105.52.
