Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Wednesday, as gains in the Oil & Gas, Healthcare and Basic Materials sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Utilities sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.01% to hit a new 1-month high, while the S&P 500 index fell 0.74%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 2.04%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V), which rose 4.60% or 8.95 points to trade at 203.33 at the close. 3M Company (NYSE:MMM) added 3.54% or 4.20 points to end at 122.70 and Amgen Inc (NASDAQ:AMGN) was up 2.57% or 6.67 points to 266.66 in late trade.
Biggest losers included Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which lost 8.77% or 12.86 points to trade at 133.79 in late trade. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) declined 7.72% or 19.34 points to end at 231.32 and Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) shed 3.24% or 5.36 points to 159.91.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Universal Health Services Inc (NYSE:UHS) which rose 13.13% to 109.37, Rollins Inc (NYSE:ROL) which was up 10.04% to settle at 39.55 and Enphase Energy Inc (NASDAQ:ENPH) which gained 9.90% to close at 291.87.
The worst performers were Assurant Inc (NYSE:AIZ) which was down 10.47% to 136.75 in late trade, Alphabet Inc Class C (NASDAQ:GOOG) which lost 9.64% to settle at 94.82 and Alphabet Inc Class A (NASDAQ:GOOGL) which was down 9.14% to 94.93 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were ESSA Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:EPIX) which rose 180.23% to 4.82, Cipher Mining Inc (NASDAQ:CIFR) which was up 42.56% to settle at 1.18 and Loyalty Ventures Inc (NASDAQ:LYLT) which gained 39.60% to close at 1.15.
The worst performers were Thermogenesis Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:THMO) which was down 49.56% to 0.11 in late trade, Fednat Holding Co (NASDAQ:FNHC) which lost 30.98% to settle at 0.42 and Taysha Gene Therapies Inc (NASDAQ:TSHA) which was down 27.52% to 2.16 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1865 to 1265 and 125 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2206 rose and 1577 declined, while 226 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 4.15% to 27.28 a new 1-month low.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.60% or 9.95 to $1,667.95 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 3.29% or 2.81 to hit $88.13 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 2.51% or 2.30 to trade at $94.04 a barrel.
EUR/USD was up 1.18% to 1.01, while USD/JPY fell 1.03% to 146.38.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 1.17% at 109.54.
